I heard that this show is like a little hard for you to explain and pitch to people, right?

I know. I really need to work on my elevator pitch. It's very difficult. It's not really like anything else, Rivals. Well, I mean, you just saw a bit there. Although, somebody the other day described it to me as the exact midpoint between Succession and The Benny Hill Show. And actually, when you think about it, that's exactly what it is.

Because it's very dramatic, it's very, you know, there's lots going on in the boardroom. And also quite a lot going on in the bedroom, Kelly.

Yes, if you know what I'm saying.

So I've heard of it.

Yeah, yeah. It's been such a great show, it's just taken off. We're thrilled, yeah.

I heard that your wife actually convinced you to do it, is that right?

She did, yeah.

What was your hesitation?

I didn't really understand what it was. Like I said, it's quite hard to explain. And I read the script and went, what is... so they're these sort of people... I mean it's set in the 80s, so there's a lot of hair and shoulder pads. And I was thinking, well that's kind of... it's a sort of drama, but it's also quite tongue-in-cheek at times. And it's got this flair to it. And she read it and went, "This is going to be massive. You've got to do this straight away." She just got it. And thank goodness she was right.

She knows the books.

She knows the books. They come from novels by Jilly Cooper from the 80s. And they are famed as the sort of books that kind of taught a generation of girls about life.

Some well-thumbed pages and a lot of copies. That's all I'm saying.

Doing a public service with those novels, yes. So they're all horrible people...

So what, but you say your character doesn't think he's evil.

I don't think Tony thinks he's a villain. I think he's just doing what he needs to do to crush everyone under his feet. And he will do whatever it takes.

That seems polite. So people also, look, love you as Doctor Who. I heard you actually grew up... is that kind of what inspired you to act?

Yeah, just watching that as a kid and going, that's an amazing thing. And then having a conversation with my parents about, well, they're actually people pretending and telling you stories. I thought, that's a great job. That doesn't seem like working at all. So yeah, and then as I grew up that kind of developed. I mean, it was a weird thing. We didn't know any actors. It didn't seem like something that was really an option.

So wait, is it true that your family was convinced you were on The Masked Singer? I heard that they thought you were lying to them. Is this real?

That was a couple of seasons ago on the British version, yeah.

And why would your family think you were lying to them? Are you a liar?

You should ask them. Yeah, they thought this was me.

We need to interrogate this.

Yeah, this character, the Phoenix I think he was called, he did have a certain way about him. Even after a while, I began to doubt it myself. I was thinking, this is me, I'm quite convinced. And the panel first came up with it. The panel on the show, when they're asked to guess who it is, they all said me. And sort of week after week they kept saying me. And it sort of sounded a bit like me. I mean, he had a better voice than me, but I was kind of thinking, I can see where they're coming from.

And my daughter, little Doris, who's now 10, she was 8 at the time, was so excited waiting for the reveal.

Oh, you let her down.

When inevitably it came for him to take the head off, and it was Ricky from the Kaiser Chiefs... she was devastated.

I really, really crushed her childhood.

Well, she's 10. Now you have some great programming she can watch right now.
