So the the the movie, You, Me and Him, uh, and so this is Fay, uh, Mavor who plays Alex, and there's Lucy Punch who plays Olivia, and you are the neighbor, John. What is your relationship?

Well, uh, Fay and Lucy's characters are a couple. Uh, one slightly older who's ready to uh start thinking about having children. And Fay's character Alex who's a bit more young, a bit more of a party girl is not ready for that at all. Uh, which becomes a bit of a schism in their relationship. Um, Olivia goes off and does the business and gets pregnant anyway. Which causes Alex to sort of storm off in a huff, get very drunk, and rather unadvisedly ends up sleeping with me, the next door neighbor.

Right.

The midlife crisis hipster next door neighbor. Um, so you then have a couple who are both pregnant at the same time. With uh the third wheel trying to get in on the act and be uh be terribly involved.

So let's speak about him a bit more. So he's John, and he's had a bit of a change in direction in his life recently?

Recently divorced. Uh, we first meet him at his divorce party. Um, clearly thrilled to be enjoying his second adolescence. Um...

So a bit of a midlife crisis?

Very much a midlife crisis. Hence the beard and the piercings and all that.

Quite fun though, I imagine, when you sort of open a wardrobe and you go, "Oh my god, look at all this stuff."

No, it's, well it's to try all the things that you feel far too old to try. You kind of get all these clothes on and think, "Oh yeah, this is, you know, you look ridiculous." But that's part of the character.

Did it feel quite good?

Kind of liked it. You know, a little bit tight, a little bit leathery.

Now your, um, your wife Georgia is the, is the producer. So I'm assuming, you know, that obviously your first choice, you are top of the list, you know, it was a shoe-in.

If only that were the case, Phillip. If only that were the case. No. All the people who weren't available, who weren't in the country, who were too expensive. And eventually, you know, as they get down the list, I'm still sitting there going, "Still available G, you know, still here." And uh, and finally they decided they would give in and let me have a go.

So how was that? Because you've worked together before, but she's not produced you before, so...

No, this is her first feature film, yeah. I mean, I suppose it could have been awful, having had that sort of power structure, but we had a lovely time.

Oh well that's good to know.

I mean, you know, clearly I'm used to her being the boss. But to have that in a professional capacity worked out quite well.

I love, I love where you've got your premiere as well, because it's part of the Glasgow Film Festival.

Yes.

And it's at the GFT in Glasgow. Which is, is that where it all started for you?

For me, yeah. Well, the Glasgow Film Theatre, which is where we will be premiering the film on Sunday night, is just around the corner from my drama school. So I used to, I saw all sorts of things there. You get cheap student tickets, and I went and Reservoir Dogs, and Betty Blue, and David Lynch movies, and all that. I went and, you know, saw all of them as a, as a student.

So this is the first time you've returned with your...

No, I did it once before. This time last year in fact, another film at the Glasgow Film Festival. So it's almost becoming an annual event.

So let's explain the hair then, because you traveled back yesterday, didn't you, so you were in South Africa, what were you filming?

I was filming something called Good Omens, which is a Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett novel which Neil Gaiman has now adapted for uh Amazon and the BBC. So uh, we, there it is with Michael Sheen. And we've been shooting that for about six months now. I just finished, yeah, about 48 hours ago.

You are uh, you're the bad guy.

Well I'm a, yeah, I'm a demon. I'm the demon and Michael plays an angel, and they sort of, they've been on Earth for millennia living alongside humanity, and I'm trying to cause trouble, he's trying to do good things, but actually we're a bit both a bit more ambiguous than that.

And how long do we have to wait before we see that? Have you only wrapped...

I think probably this time next year, something like that. Another year.

And there was absolutely no time for tourism whilst you were there, you saw nothing, you were just working solid.

I didn't see a thing. No, well this came at the end of quite a long shoot, this little bit in South Africa. We've filmed most of it around London. Um, and then there was this sort of two-week block at the end in South Africa. So of course everything we hadn't managed to shoot for six months previously, we go, "We'll do that in South Africa. We'll build a set somewhere." So it was two weeks that were quite full-on, very long days.

Oh, well it's done now, everybody look forward to seeing that.

Normally when you have a movie like this, you would think uh that you would be, you know, part of selling the movie, promoting the movie, you'd be on social media. But you don't really do very much of that at all, do you?

I don't, no, I never have done. I think it was 'cause social media was kind of exploding around about the time that I suddenly found myself a bit sort of ubiquitous. Yeah, and I think the two things combined to make me think, "Oh, that's not something I need in my life. I don't need another, another place where people can find me." And I've just sort of stuck with that. Partly through ignorance really, I don't really... I feel like I'm aware that I'm a bit of a philistine about it, and a slightly kind of grumpy old man about it. And I've just kind of rolled with that.

It must be quite nice in that world though, not to have to, even for it to be on your radar when in so many people's lives it is huge.

Yes. Yeah. I mean I may re- eventually I'll give in, but right now I quite enjoy it. And Georgia does it, so I kind of, I look over her shoulder now and again and find out what this thing called Facebook is.

One day you'll be fishing for likes.

Oh, I'll be desperate. That's the problem, that's part of the reason I resist it, because I would become so hooked on it, and so needy about it, and the thing of going, "Oh, interesting, what do you think I can say about my life today?" I would become obsessed. It's just as well I don't do it. Don't go there, don't go there.

We also haven't spoken about Bad Samaritan either, and that's, you have to come back and talk to us about that when that comes out. When is that...

Well it comes out in the US in April, but I don't know when it comes out here yet.

What's your role there?

He's a nutter. He's a proper, full-on nutter.

This is really, the guy next door, hipster, the demon, the nutter. How beautifully varied it all is.
